As Gary Vaynerchuk once said, “Within a year, social media will simply be called media.” The internet was built around social communication. We now have the technology and culture that promotes many of these Web 2.0 sites.
To say SM is a fad, is to discount the entire internet.

I've never liked the term “social media” myself. Yet one has to contend with the vocabulary that the majority will understand.
Of course, the fact that its a misnomer confuses the issue anyway.
